AVERAGE WINNING GRADED TIMES - 1st Jan to 31st August 2017

One thing people often wonder is how the graded strength at one track compares with another. Unfortunately that is impossible to give an answer to as people have many different views on what determines "strength". However, Chester at BVOF analyses graded racing results at all tracks to produce the table below, which we believe includes a number of the factors people consider most important.

There is considerable variation in the ability of greyhounds competing in the various Grades at English tracks and the following Table, based on an analysis by CHESTER of the BVOF of the going adjusted winning times of Graded race winners during Jan-Aug 2017, provides a means of comparing Graded times/Ratings for the standard trip at English tracks.

The Table shows:

The average going adjusted winning times for each Grade
The percentage of races in each Grade
CHESTER of BVOF's Rating for the times
The total number of Graded races and their average time/Rating
The number and average time/Rating of the fastest 5% of race winners

In making comparisons it should be borne in mind that for a variety of reasons times at individual tracks do vary over time as, for example, at Central Park where in 2017 times for the standard trip are significantly faster than previously because of phototiming changes.

When considering the relative Graded strength of tracks a simple comparison of winning times/Ratings by Grade can be misleading as account has to be taken of the proportion of races in the particular Grade at each track. For example, at a track staging very few A1 races the average winning time will be flattering when compared with a track staging a high proportion of A1's. A better measure of the quality of top Graders at tracks is a comparison of the average time/Rating of the fastest 5% of Graded winners, although such comparisons will be less reliable where the sample for either track is small (say, fewer than 50 races) because it can be distorted by a few exceptional times or unreliable going calls .

Comparing Prize money by reference to Grades can also be deceptive as the total prize money depends on the proportion of races in each Grade. For example, around 22% of races are Graded A1 at Romford as compared with just 2% at Hove. Henlow also stage very few A1 or A2 races, Harlow's top Grade is A4 and the top Grade at Mildenhall is A5.
